i suppose
last week was only an aftershock
of the earthquake you were before.
this place used to vibrate
with metal strings and melodic,
off-key shouting-
testimonies to life,
emitting coffee-scented moods
and the burn of it too.

i had memorized the
sounds of silence,
a cacophony
so despised
i couldn't help but relish it.
no longer had i known
the sounds of folk
and scent of mocha-
you became nothing more
than an echo of the laughter
i so desperately needed to hear again.

then the echoes got louder,
bouncing ferociously off the walls
to be made manifest
and dissipate.

i walked into your room
expecting exactly what i found-
an unmade bed,
bare desktops,
and an empty beer
(the one that you insisted you needed
just days ago).

i pressed my nose
into the pillow
hoping desperately,
begging silently
for incense and cologne and starbucks
to penetrate my mind
and thinking fervently
"you bastard,
i already know
what a clean sheet smells like."

it's amazing
how strong an aftershock can be,
but still it always ends
in echoes, fragments,
figments and sadness.

i saw an empty bottle
of five hour energy
on the side of a busy road
and i hate how vivid
such a void object can
i could go for some 5 hour energy right now actually

edit sept. 1-- i certainly wasn't expecting this! thank you so much to ShadowedAcolyte for featuring this piece, and to everyone who reads, faves, or comments on it. it really does mean the world to me. :huggle:

It seems weird that literature/poetry is even a category on DA, but poems like this show why the genre deserves it's place here. Good stuff.

I don't necessarily agree with you on that- after all, art includes so many different forms and literature is certainly one of them. c: Still, thank you for the comment! I appreciate it very much :tighthug:

I wasn't saying Lit isn't art, far from it. I just always associated this site with visual art only. Anyway, you're welcome
